Sunshine, July and Daily Tangents #21 Black & White
Vintage Tape by Buddy Summer |
Hello, welcome to day 21 of my little blog project: Sunshine, July and Daily Tangents. For the entirety of this month, I've been creating posts based on the theme found in the below list. Each day of July looks after a word (or words) and when the time comes I take that word and attempt to creatively expand on it in a blog post.
Before this month started I noted down random words as I thought, saw or heard of them and here they are...
If you have been following my project or you've read a couple posts, you may remember day 11 (Paddington) when I had a beyond brilliant day. Well, I spent the day in my favourite place in the world: the darkroom. So for Black & White, I've decided to share what I've made.
When these photograms developed I was so astonished with the results as I was using new photographic paper for the first time. This paper, I had accidentally revealed to light a few years ago when I had no idea what a darkroom was let alone the developing gear. However, this faux pas may have meant a grainier result; It turns out that seconds in the light may not completely burn the photographic paper- be absolutely careful with this though as it depends on the paper and strength of light. I am obsessed with this effect and how it added a whole other level to the photogram.
To me, there's such a huge difference from traditional photographic paper (Ilford Multigrade Fibre based paper) and the new yet old paper I used (name unknown). At first, when I took the latter paper out of the jet black bag it felt like an ordinary piece of card. This is why I felt confused when working out the right way up. The texture makes for a gorgeous photogram with a vintage graininess quality. And when I say gorgeous I mean I love them so much and I am so obsessed that every time I look at them I get an excited rush of love feeling. If you're arty, you'll know exactly what I mean!
There are some photograms I made which I've decided to hold back for myself. I treasure them and I think it's nice to keep some things special and not shared.
I wrote a tutorial exactly a year ago on how to create photograms which I will leave a link to here. I've learnt a lot since then and I'm thinking about doing an upgraded version including all the tips and tricks I've picked up on in the past year. I would also love to do a tutorial on how to develop negatives using the brown negative strips you'd find in your photo box in the loft. If this is something you are interested in, please let me know.
...this is a photograph I developed from a negative. I loved the beautiful image taken on a sunny day. I think capturing a photo like this in black and white give a whole new characteristic to the image. Colour is used to influence mood and I think this photograph can appear like a solemn or scary day at the dock or conversely a happy memory from the old days.
So what happens when you're a bit cocky and thinking: I know exactly what my blog post of today will be, I'll just sort out the bits later on and then it gets to later on and you haven't sorted it. You have to take pictures when it's very very dark, using a lamp. I hope the photos convey how brilliant I think they look. The light links with the theme, just saying. You'd think I'd have learnt after staying up very late to write and upload that If I know what my post is about, just get it done get to sleep early. You know?
Thank you for reading today's post. I will be back tomorrow with day 22: Strawberry Milkshake! Whoop whoop! (I realise my list says strawberry but the milkshake part just couldn't fit in the photo).
Love,
Buddy xx
