Sunshine, July and Daily Tangents #3 Moped
Hello and welcome to day 3 of my Sunshine, July and Daily Tangents blog project. I finally settled on a title last night and I am very pleased with it.
I am also very pleased as I've just found out that there have been quite a few people that have read the previous #2 blog post of July. Whoop Whoop! This made me feel good so thank you for reading!
Today's word is Moped and I am pleased to say that this word was not one I was concerned about as instantly I knew exactly what I wanted to discuss...
When I was 15 I went on a trip to Italy with my school. We travelled to Sorrento for five days and spent one of them (the Wednesday, I remember) in Capri. On this trip, I experienced the best Pizza I have ever had to this day, the stunning sights of Italy, the astonishing ruins of Pompeii and of course Mopeds! We travelled by coach but one of the first things I noticed (other than the gigantic volcano and baking heat) was that the cars were circled with innumerous Mopeds. I can remember sitting in the coach and pointing them out everywhere I looked.
Italy, to me, is the most beautiful place in the world! Whilst we were there it was sunny 99% of the time- that 1% of rain was when it really rained; flooding and clinging onto the ruined archway in Pompeii.
Hotels and homes sit on the slope of the mountain as if neighbours couldn't bear to part so they built up not too far away.
The ocean was Mamma Mia Blue with speckles of white- lavish Yachts sailing away from the shore.
There are purple flowers and lemons everywhere! I didn't realise at the time but apparently, my mum loves lemons which meant that she may have loved a lemon-scented gift more than a beautiful pink scarf?
Lastly, Icecream. Anywhere we visited there was an opportunity to buy a Gelato- and you can really get them in pretty much any flavour.
The obsession began once I spotted the variety of colours. At this point, I was rather taken with the 50s and Vintage so stepping foot in sunny Italy where the houses and streets looked a little bit different from home had me entranced.
The roads of Sorrento were rather crazy and it felt especially trying going up the zig-zag path of Mount Vesuvius.
Each time I saw a Moped I would get the Lizzie Mcguire Volare song stuck in my head. I always thought the lyrics were: "Bom Larde oh. Bom Larde Oh Ohh Oh Oh". Apparently, these aren't the words, but to me, they always will be!
On the very last day of the trip, my teacher had asked the owner of the Moped parked outside the hotel for permission to take a photo with it. Luckily they agreed and I sat on this huge Moped, smiling rather shyly at the camera. Unfortunately, when we set off on our journey we discovered that the picture didn't take and so this memory exists only in my mind.
We visited Amalfi on our way to the airport which is where I found my little pink Moped ornament. This is also were the Galaxy chocolate Audrey Hepburn advert was filmed which was airing at the time. I was really excited by this what with my love of vintage at age 15.
This trip will always hold a place in my heart as I adored my time there. There was a lot of meaning in that trip in all aspects and I hope I never forget how wonderful it was.
At 15 I was very anxious to leave the country and head off with the school- of course, I was it was a big thing for me. But I am so so grateful to my past self for going on that holiday and to the lovely teachers that helped me get there.
Every now and then I find a symbol of that trip and when I let myself rummage through the memory box I can recall the feel of my time in Italy. My little pink Moped holds a whole heap of good feeling.
As ever, thank you for reading this nostalgic day 3 of Sunshine, July and Daily Tangents. I will be back tomorrow with day 4: Snail.
Love,
Buddy Summer
